What is Provocative Change Works?

Sometimes the quickest way to loosen a problem isn't to talk about it more seriously. It's to look at it differently.

Provocative Change Works, developed by Nick Kemp and inspired by Frank Farrelly's Provocative Therapy, is a conversational style that combines warmth, humour, honesty and gentle challenge to help people break free from unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour.

Despite its name, this isn't about being harsh, confrontational or deliberately provocative for the sake of it. In fact, it relies on the opposite. When there is trust, respect and genuine rapport, humour and carefully timed challenge can help people see themselves from a new perspective. Often, when we stop defending an old story, we become free to write a new one.

I've been training in Provocative Change Works with Nick Kemp for the past two years, and my study of the model is ongoing. Rather than offering it as a standalone therapy, I weave its conversational style throughout my work wherever it naturally fits. Combined with approaches such as Integral Eye Movement Technique (IEMT), Metaphors of Movement and other change-focused methods, it allows me to tailor each session to the individual while creating therapy that is engaging, thought-provoking and, at times, surprisingly enjoyable.

After all, meaningful change doesn't always come through seriousness alone. Sometimes the moment we laugh at an old pattern is the very moment it begins to lose its grip.
