What is Memory Reconsolidation?

Have you ever found yourself thinking: "I know why I do this… so why can't I stop?"

Perhaps you've spent years understanding where your anxiety comes from, recognising unhealthy relationship patterns, or trying to challenge negative thoughts. Yet something still keeps pulling you back into the same emotional cycle.

You're not alone. Many people have a good understanding of their difficulties, but insight on its own doesn't always create lasting change.

That's where memory reconsolidation comes in.

Memory reconsolidation is a natural process within the brain that allows old emotional learnings to be updated when the right conditions are created. Rather than simply helping you cope with difficult emotions, it offers the opportunity for the emotional patterns driving those feelings to change at their source.

For many years, scientists believed emotional memories were permanent once they had formed. Research has shown that this isn't the case. When an emotional memory is safely reactivated alongside a new and different experience, the brain has the ability to update what it has previously learned. In simple terms, your nervous system can recognise that it no longer needs to respond in the same way.

This doesn't erase your memories or change your life story. Instead, it changes the emotional weight those experiences continue to carry.

Old blueprints, present-day struggles

Many of the challenges people face today are linked to emotional learnings that made perfect sense at the time they developed. Experiences in childhood, difficult relationships, loss, trauma, stress or repeated emotional experiences can all teach the brain ways of protecting us.

The problem is that these protective responses don't always switch off.

You may continue to feel anxious when there is no real danger, doubt yourself despite evidence of your abilities, struggle to trust others, or react strongly in situations that don't seem to warrant it. These aren't signs that you're broken. They're often signs that your nervous system is still working from an old emotional blueprint.

My role is to help identify those deeper emotional patterns and create the conditions for your brain to update them.

As those underlying learnings begin to change, people often notice that old triggers lose their intensity, unhelpful behaviours become easier to move away from, and emotional reactions begin to feel calmer and more manageable. Rather than constantly battling against yourself, change can start to feel more natural because the nervous system is no longer responding in the same way.

Memory reconsolidation isn't a therapy in itself. It's a scientific understanding of how lasting emotional change happens within the brain. The therapeutic approaches I use, including Integral Eye Movement Technique (IEMT) and other neuroscience-informed techniques, are designed to support this natural process of change.

Every session is tailored to you, your experiences and your goals, creating a safe, compassionate and collaborative space to explore what has been keeping you stuck.

The aim isn't to change who you are. It's to help free you from emotional patterns that no longer belong in your present, so you can move forward with greater confidence, clarity and choice.

Ready for change?

If this sounds like it might help, I'd be pleased to hear from you.
